Ugly: Main character. (Typically) a tall-er
male.Tenor( A-low G# high) 30/40 scene-lets
Is innocent &
guileless. Considerate..Loves and trusts his mom, but is mis-understood and
rejected by dad, brothers and sisters and ultimately his whole community.
Heart and conflict- He longs to love and be loved .He is playful, yet
not out of touch with his feelings, both of sadness and joy. The person cast in
this role must be prepared to share from their own personal store of emotion, in order to fully communicate this
complex character; they must BECOME Ugly, not just say his lines.
This Show will ride on
the emotional energy supplied by the actor who plays this role. (7-songs)
Ida: Ugly’s
Mom. Older female. Alto. 20/40 scene-lets
Ida is a strong woman.
Has depth of resolve to carry out what she knows to be right. She’s secure in
her identity. She is The Anchor in the storm of this story
Heart & Conflict- She is determined to believe in Ugly. She is not
mean or judgmental but firm, willing to bear with people until they see and
understand. Person cast in this role must convey faith and action in the face
of their doubts. Must have connection to Ugly/ castmate . (6-songs)
Cat: Antagonist/Villain.
(Typically) tall-er male. Tenor 13/40 scene-lets.
A loner, obcessed with
his desire to make a meal out of Ugly. He hosts his own TV show as a master
chef. Will send others to their death to achieve his agenda.
Heart & Conflict- A selfish deceiver & slick talker. Sees
himself as smarter than most others. In the end, is almost pitiful as he goes a
bit mad. (1-song, 1-duet)
Drake: Ugly’s Dad. Tall-er male. Tenor. 15/40 scene-lets.
Must be strong vocally, opens Show.
Drake is stereo-typical man/dad. Almost comes off
as “fool”.
He is trying to be a good husband and dad.
Heart & Conflict-Drake is more about image; the outside. He cares
more about what others think of him than the truth concerning the inner parts
of his own character. He is clueless how & why others can be so truly
virtuous.
Maureen: Best Friend of Ida. Female. Alto. 10/40
scene-lets
Maureen trys to be true to Ida but is at times
swayed by the crowd.
Heart & Conflict- she has trouble being a caring friend, vs being
out of step with the crowd.
Queenie: Indoor
Cat/ highbrow & cultured person. Female. Alto. (2-duets)
Best friend and companion pet
to Lowbutt
Heart & Conflict-Torn between staying highbrow vs
adventuring off with “Cat”.
Lowbutt: Indoor Chicken/Highbrow & Cultured
person.

with either supporting Queenie and encouraging her to follow her passion or

He’s a retired
military vet-now pilot, leader of his “Squadron”(British Accent?).Husband of
Dot.
Heart & Conflict-A loyal do-gooder. He commits to do what’s right
even in the face of dire consequences for himself and his friends.
Dot: Wife of Graylag/ mature goose.

She’s an aging stewardess and
a dutiful wife.

Bull Frog A wise befriend-er of Ugly./ streetwise
mature frog.

a person with value and encourages him to be exactly who he’s made to be and
enjoy it.
Heart & Conflict- He’s an out-cast but has made his peace with it.
Values people just the way they are. He’s an optimist, yet can acknowledge
there is always what may be considered negative in everything, but not to focus
on it. Embraces truth and loves people.

standard.
